Mr. Hookeydooker Man

life was a 'hookeydooker' to Grandpa Newlin. With every visit he played the 'hide-the-hookeydooker' game with us. and after every visit he waved goodbye while performing the 'hookeydooker jump'. he was famous for it.

i love how my gramps told silly jokes about 'sandy claws' at christmas each year. i love how he stocked his fridge with processed cheese in a wrapper and sunny delight for us kids. (all those 'fake' things mom never allowed us to have.) i love how the two of us could share our secrets in french and he would call me jolie poupee- his beautiful doll.

It was so nice to see you this morning and give you a big big hug. It meant a lot to me. Your Gramps could and would brighten up a room. I will never forget his smile, laughter and humor.

Your grandpa and I hit it off the first time we met. We talked baseball, his time in the war and life. Each time Jen and I visited from school in San Diego he would have potato salad ready for us. He would tell stories while your grandma, who I would always sit next to, would quietly correct his dates and names of certain places under her breath. Your grandparents were wonderful people and brightened many lives; mine included.

What a great picture of you and
your gramps, my Dad, who was very famous for the hookeydooker, no one
could do it quite like him. I will always remember him for his humor,
and that wonderful smile, his hugs,
he was such a special person! He called me his "favorite daughter"
(since I am his only daughter!)

Hey Jules...great blog and beautiful pic...we are all blessed to have had such a wonderful grandfather that made the joy of life, humor and good times the priorities. During my many over night visits, I loved being greeted on Sunday mornings with the newspaper "funnies" and of course a glass of good ole sunny D. Ah, and 'sandy claws'...so do you remember the one about the snail with the s painted on its shell...yep, you got it, "s-cargot".

Just got time to look at this wonderful site. I'm glad I got time to talk with you a little this past week. Lawrence Owen Newlin ("Dad", "Uncle Larry", "Gramps") was a remarkable individual that appreciated quality (yes, a Dodger fan too). I know he is smilin' about your teaching challenge ahead, as Newlins have long been known for their professionalism, committment to education (the future) and service. I suppose you already know this, but when you Goggle "hookeydooker" it finds one hit. He was unique- enjoy your dance...
